White Tie vs Black Tie Dress code

Most people have heard of a White Tie or Black Tie dress code, but perhaps have never explored what each dress code demands.

In short, both are the most formal of events with White Tie being the top of the formal scale, and Black Tie being next in line.

If you have been invited to a formal event, it is advisable to ask the host which dress code is expected.

Wearing White tie to a Black tie event would be acceptable, but to wear Black tie to a White tie event, would be completely inappropriate.

What is Black Tie Dress Code?

Black tie is a formal dress code for evening events, typically starting after 5pm.

You’ll often encounter it at weddings, balls, galas, and formal dinners.

It consists of the following:

For Men:

  • Jacket: A black or midnight blue dinner jacket (tuxedo) with satin or grosgrain lapels—usually shawl or peak style.

  • Trousers: Matching trousers with a satin stripe down the side.

  • Shirt: A white dress shirt with either a pleated or Marcella (piqué) front and double cuffs.

  • Bow Tie & Waist Covering: A black silk bow tie and either a cummerbund or low-cut waistcoat.

  • Footwear: Black patent leather shoes with black dress socks.

For Women:

  • Dresses: A full-length evening gown is traditional, though an elegant cocktail dress or formal jumpsuit may be suitable depending on the event.

  • Accessories: Formal heels, refined jewellery, and a clutch complete the look.

What is White Tie Dress Code?

White tie, also called full evening dress or evening tails, is the most formal dress code, reserved for high-profile events such as royal receptions, state banquets, ceremonial dinners, and prestigious university balls.

It is strictly evening wear and signals the highest level of formality.

Men’s White Tie Attire:

  • Tailcoat: Black evening tailcoat with satin peak lapels, worn open. Waist-length at the front, with knee-length tails at the back.

  • Trousers: Matching black trousers with a double satin braid along the outer seams.

  • Shirt: Stiff white shirt with a wing collar and Marcella (piqué) bib front.

  • Waistcoat: White piqué cotton waistcoat, cut low in a ‘V’ or ‘U’ shape—must cover the waistband but stay hidden beneath the front of the coat.

  • Bow Tie: White bow tie in piqué or silk, always hand-tied.

  • Accessories: Shirt studs and cufflinks—mother-of-pearl is a classic choice.

  • Shoes: Highly polished black patent leather shoes with black socks.

  • Optional: A white pocket square adds a subtle touch of refinement.

Women’s White Tie Attire:

  • Dress: A full-length ball gown in formal fabrics such as silk, satin, or velvet.

  • Accessories: Elegant jewellery, evening gloves (optional), and a formal clutch.

Hint: Never wear a wristwatch. It is considered ill-mannered to be mindful of time in the company of distinguished guests.
